Music represented to Van Gogh the ultimate form of artistic expression. He believed that by emulating music, painting could articulate deep truths and impart a lasting emotional impact on its viewers. Thus, as an inquiry into the significance of sound and music for the artist, I have comprised a selection of works written by composers who transformed the way their contemporaries thought of the musical art form and played an influential role throughout, not only Vincent van Gogh’s life, but everyone who came after them.
